The Engine Shed is now closed. We have left these original pages of the website as a record of our work.
The Engine Shed Building
The Engine Shed is a lovely old building in St Leonard's Lane, Edinburgh. It dates back to the 1830's and has a fascinating history as part of the 'Innocent Railway' network, the very first passenger railway in Edinburgh.
The railway theme continues to this day with a well used walking and cycle path passing our front door that follows the route of the old line. The path goes through the nearby Innocent Railway tunnel, one of Edinburgh's hidden gems, and emerges in Holyrood Park. Not surprisingly, our café is popular with walking parties and with groups of friends and families meeting up after a Saturday morning stroll in the park.
The Engine Shed is a three storey, long, narrow building that we use to the maximum. It is fully accessible, with a lift to all floors. Both the entrance area downstairs and the walls in the café are often used for art exhibitions. Please contact us for details.
On the ground floor is our bakery, which produces a variety of freshly baked goods for our café and for sale in shops throughout the city and beyond.
Next door to the bakery, also on the ground floor, is our tofu production unit. It makes high quality tofu for use on the premises and for sale throughout Scotland via Green City Wholefoods. Just outside the front door of the Engine Shed is a small building that is used as a smokehouse, to make our distinctive 'smoked tofu'.
On the first floor is our celebrated vegetarian café, open Monday to Saturday 10.00am to 4.00pm. The serving counter is open to the kitchen behind which helps give the café its buzz and feeling of connection with the trainees. Trainees are very much in evidence here, working in the kitchen, serving or clearing tables and our customers get to know them personally.
Just along the corridor from the café is another kitchen which we use to prepare salads for the café and also hot & cold buffets for our conference service.
Behind the catering kitchen is a brand new kitchen which has been built to allow us to extend our outside catering service. We are in the process of developing this new venture, so watch this space!
The top floor of the building houses our offices and a small kitchen area that is used to prepare teas and coffees for the conference rooms. We have one large conference room that can take up to 60 people and a smaller meeting room that can accommodate up to 12 people.
